Volumetric Surveys

If you're involved in measuring bulk inventory, developing landfills, blasting, roadwork, mapping or mining of any kind then Precision Laser Measurement Services, Inc. (PLMS) has a service that will be invaluable to you. PLMS introduces accurate measurement of stockpiles accomplished quickly and easily using the MDL's Quarryman ALS and DGM's Digital Ground Modeling Software. Our state-of-the-art equipment allows us accuracy and speed never possible before.

The Quarryman ALS instrument employs a laser system which bounces a pulsed beam of light energy off the stockpile surface. An internal electronic clock measures the "time of flight" of the pulse and the distance is calculated (the speed of light being accurately known). Simultaneous electronic vertical and horizontal angels are measured indicating the direction of the observation.

As the name suggests Laser Profiling and Digital Ground Modeling go hand-in-hand. The convenient Laser Profiling System enables on-site reference data entry and recording. The power of this system is seen in its vertical and horizontal angels and distances up to 1,500 feet measured quickly and accurately. Using Vertical, Horizontal, or Random "Scanning" Techniques, entire stockpiles can be surveyed in complete safety within minutes. Automatically logged results are then processed immediately in our field computers. It is all a part of our service: state-of-the-art equipment giving you up-to-date, meaningful information to help better manage your business.

DGM's Ground Modeling Software produces accurate computer representations of the surface of the earth, called Digital Ground Models. These models are created from data the survey data collected onsite. DGM's latest version has been designed and tested within a practical engineering environment with use by engineers, surveyors and scientists throughout the world. No wonder, the highly accurate results produced by MDL's Quarryman Laser Profiling System and DGM's Digital Ground Model Software has resulted in its acceptance by major accounting firms around the world.

Increased Accuracy: Increased Confidence

Our state-of-the-art system is a prismless system. It reflects right off the surface area; therefore no rod and prism are needed. This feature enables us to survey and collect data on the entire surface area without setting foot on the surface. All anomalies and every "nook and cranny" are measured with thousands of data points (not hundreds, like other data methods). These highly accurate measurements will ensure confidence when measuring bulk inventory.

Method Comparisons

"PLMS .vs. Aerial Surveys"
"PLMS .vs. GPS Surveys"
  • Takes weeks to get results
  • Aerial missions are weather dependent
  • Much more expensive
  • Ground control must usually be established on target site
  • Ambiguity of edge detection of target piles
  • Less accurate
  • May take days to collect data
  • Takes days to get resultsMore expensive
  • Safety and accessibility issues with regards to climbing on piles
  • Pile point density much less - 100's .vs. 1000's of pile point
  • Less pile points make pile representation less accurate and as a result, the volume calculation less accurate

Benefits of Using PLMS

  • Highly accurate: ± 2% of actual pile volume
  • Weather not a factor (except for extreme weather)
  • Independent verification of inventory
  • Results in under 24 hours after completion of survey
  • Safety - not necessary to climb on piles and able to stay out of hazardous areas
  • Minimize impact on daily site operations
